Palantir, the software company founded by billionaire Peter Thiel, on Tuesday won a major contract in Britain to help overhaul the technology system of the country’s state-run health service, overcoming concerns about a firm known for its military-related work in the United States securing such a sensitive role involving patient data. The National Health Service said Palantir had been awarded the seven-year contract, worth 330 million pounds, or about $415 million, to build a new platform that integrates data from across the N.H.S. Called the Federated Data Platform, the system is intended to make it easier to share patient information and analyze wider health trends across the sprawling health service. Palantir was a controversial choice, as some doctors, civil society groups and members of Parliament had raised concerns about giving the company responsibility for building what could eventually become one of the world’s largest repositories of health data. Palantir was awarded the contract in partnership with Accenture, the business consulting firm, PwC, NECS and Carnall Farrar.

Palantir’s mythology is far too precious

Yet Palantir’s top line is only expected to grow 16% this year, according to forecasts gathered by LSEG. There’s also a risk that Palantir’s ability to secure government contracts, which account for more than half its top line, will be restrained by its politics. For example, Palantir bought about $50 million of gold bars in 2021 to prepare for unpredictable “black swan” events. Also sitting on Palantir’s balance sheet are stakes in targets of special purpose acquisition companies, which it bought in exchange for purchase orders. It doesn’t take a wizard to see that in the eyes of investors Palantir is far too precious.

It was Angermayer who introduced Bisslinger to Thiel at the party, Thiel would later tell the FBI. If Thiel chose to attend, Bisslinger said, Bisslinger would arrange for him to meet privately with Putin. Opinion | The Reactionary Futurism of Marc Andreessen
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Ezra Klein | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +4 min
I think the Republican Party’s collapse into incoherence reflects the fact that much of the modern right is reactionary, not conservative. It’s a coalition obsessed with where we went wrong: the weakness, the political correctness, the liberalism, the trigger warnings, the smug elites. The Silicon Valley cohort Andreessen belongs to has added a bit to this formula. Rather, it’s the pairing of the reactionary’s sodden take on modern society with the futurist’s starry imagining of the bright tomorrow. So call it what it is: reactionary futurism.

CEO Henry Ward cofounded Carta, originally called eShares, in 2012 as a service for startups to digitize their paper stock certificates. Today Carta helps startups track their investors, employees manage their equity awards, and venture capitalists administer their funds. NEW YORK (AP) — The already-alarming proliferation of child sexual abuse images on the internet could become much worse if something is not done to put controls on artificial intelligence tools that generate deepfake photos, a watchdog agency warned on Tuesday. In a written report, The U.K.-based Internet Watch Foundation urges governments and technology providers to act quickly before a flood of AI-generated images of child sexual abuse overwhelms law enforcement investigators and vastly expands the pool of potential victims. If it isn’t stopped, the flood of deepfake child sexual abuse images could bog investigators down trying to rescue children who turn out to be virtual characters. “That is just incredibly shocking.”Sexton said his charity organization, which is focused on combating online child sexual abuse, first began fielding reports about abusive AI-generated imagery earlier this year. It particularly targets the European Union, where there's a debate over surveillance measures that could automatically scan messaging apps for suspected images of child sexual abuse even if the images are not previously known to law enforcement.

Billionaire megadonor and Trump supporter Peter Thiel became an FBI informant in 2021, Insider reported. What does an FBI informant do? The main responsibility of an FBI informant is, as the name suggests, to provide information and intelligence to the bureau. According to an internal FBI guide, the FBI can recruit lawyers, reporters, clergy members, prison officials, and even minors and individuals who live overseas. They "will be either an 'FBI source' or a 'former FBI source' and, in turn, his or her conduct or misconduct will reflect upon the FBI."
